I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year

I learnt about this poem, given by Queen Elizabeth II at 13 years old then to her father, King George VI, as part of the Christmas message in 1939 and it has been repeated as a poem used by the Royal Family throughout the years.

The poem, written in 1908 by Minnie Louise Haskins and privately published in 1912, was part of a collection titled The Desert. It caught the public attention and the popular imagination when King George VI quoted it in his 1939 Christmas broadcast to the British Empire.

Her words live on inscribed at the entrance to the George VI memorial chapel in St George’s Chapel, Windsor, and in a window at the Queen’s Chapel of the Savoy. The poem was read at the funeral of Elizabeth, the Queen Mother in 2002.

God knows
----------------
And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:

“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”

And he replied:

“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”

So I went forth, and finding the hand of God, trod gladly into the night.
And he led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone east.

So heart be still: what need our little life our human life to know, if God hath comprehension? In all the dizzy strife of things both high and low, God hideth his intention.

God knows. His will is best. The stretch of years which wind ahead, so dim to our imperfect vision, are clear to god. Our fears are premature; in him, all time hath full provision.

Then rest: until God moves to lift the veil from our impatient eyes, when, as the sweeter features of life’s stern face we hail, fair beyond all surmise God’s thought around his creatures our mind shall fill.

Christmas Devotion for GB Party 2016

I have not shared a Christmas Devotion for a long time. It used to be our company had few girls like 20 over and we officers would take turn to share a simple Christmas Stories with the girls. But now, we have grown into a group of 60 over, organising events is quite challenging.

This year, the organising team headed by Beatrice Chung and Lois Wong has asked me to share. I had a long think about it. At first, I was planning on sharing "The Twelve Days of Christmas" and its real meaning behind the 12 numeric numbers. But after reading and understanding all the doctrines of it, I realised that it is rather hard to explain to so many cadets and juniors who would have attention span issues. I have to keep it simple and easy to understand and yet meaningful and goes well with the theme of "Season of Giving". Below was my devotion sharing and I was very pleased with the outcome and participation of the girls with writing their thanksgiving notes and hanging on the empty Christmas Tree and at the end, it was a beautiful decorated Christmas Tree.

Honouring My Mother In Law

My Mother In Law is a very dear lady who would laugh at the simplest of things and worry about the smallest tiny problems regarding her children. To my husband, she has the pillar of support all his life until he married me. She is simple minded and kind. She does her tasks well as a mother.

Although she nags a lot, probably out of needs to have someone listens to her, she still holds the family together by insisting on family dinners and festive celebrations. The family together-ness owes a lot to her.

The special gift I gave her on her 73rd Birthday in 2016, was that I decided to solve her Gregorian birthdate mystery for her. She knew her Chinese Calendar date and the year that she was born but not the Gregorian date.

Lo, I found out that she was born on 3 November 1943 and it was a Wednesday, I told her that she has triple "3" in her birthday, 3/11/43 and on Wednesday.

Sermon on Good Shepherd and his sheeps

Luther House Service
Rev M Augustin

Exodus 32:7-14

7 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. 8 They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, 'These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.'

9 "I have seen these people," the LORD said to Moses, "and they are a stiff-necked people. 10 Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation."

11 But Moses sought the favour of the LORD his God. "O LORD," he said, "why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians say, 'It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth'? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people. 13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self: 'I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land I promised them, and it will be their inheritance for ever.' " 14 Then the LORD relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

1 Timothy 1:12-17

12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners-of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Early 1800, Fanny Crosby caught influenza at 6 years old, they treated her eyes with mustard and caused her blind. She grew gracefully with forgiveness and wrote 8000 hymns under different names. Blessed Assurance

The black sheep always get lost all the time, always want to see if the grass is greener on the other side.

Exodus 32:1

1 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered round Aaron and said, "Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him."

Israelites were quick to forget after Moses' 40 days conference with God. God called them stiff-necked people who were too arrogant to bow their heads. God was fuming in anger wanting to burn Israelites. But Moses interceded with God for his people. He used logics, psychology to argue with God to show mercy to his people and not to remove them. Moses was a shepherd in the desert for 40 years. So he had a heart of shepherd.

We are the people of God. We are called to be good shepherds in this nation. How to do this role well ?

1) Pray for our land
What and how do we pray ? If we were them, what would we pray for ? Not to ask that they be wiped out. We cannot intercede until we open our eyes to see the sufferings around us and out ourselves in their shoes.

2) To love
There is only one all powerful being and his weapon is love.
We could only intercede with we are filled with love. The only way we can change this world is love.
People are self-centered and we don't care.

3) Our standard as good shepherd is Jesus
What set us apart is the grace of God and our achievements. As we measure up to the great Shepherd then we know we lack and in wanting.

The Longest Day from the Book by Cornelius Ryan

12 On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the LORD in the presence of Israel:"O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon."
13 So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies,
as it is written in the Book of p
PpThe sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a man. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel!
15 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.

The day the sun stood still.

Principles we can employ in winning our daily battles :-.

1) Understand the nature of our battle
Ephesians 6:12
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

2) Use every weapon at our disposal
i) God's promise
ii) God's help
iii) God's power

Dare we pray audaciously ?

Matthew 7:11 If you know how to give good gifts to your kids, how much your father in heaven will give you more than what you ask for.

Fruit of the Spirit and Way of Love

Fruit of Spirit is sometimes translated as Harvest of Spirit, it indicates its an end product.

Galatians 5:19-26King James Version (KJV)

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Galatians 5:19-26The Message (MSG)

19-21 It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits; the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on.
This isn’t the first time I have warned you, you know. If you use your freedom this way, you will not inherit God’s kingdom.
22-23 But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.
23-24 Legalism is helpless in bringing this about; it only gets in the way. Among those who belong to Christ, everything connected with getting our own way and mindlessly responding to what everyone else calls necessities is killed off for good—crucified.
25-26 Since this is the kind of life we have chosen, the life of the Spirit, let us make sure that we do not just hold it as an idea in our heads or a sentiment in our hearts, but work out its implications in every detail of our lives. That means we will not compare ourselves with each other as if one of us were better and another worse. We have far more interesting things to do with our lives. Each of us is an original.

But the fruit of the Spirit is
love - affection for others
joy - exuberance about life
peace - serenity
longsuffering - willingness to stick with things
gentleness - a sense of compassion in the heart
goodness - a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people
faith - involved in loyal commitments
Meekness -  not needing to force our way in life
temperance - able to marshal and direct our energies wisely

1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

Love is patient,
Love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,
it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

I have never thought of reading 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 with Galation 5:21-22 as one big picture where love is inter-woven into every part of the overall picture.

Rich in Christ

Ephesians 1:3-14

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will- 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace 8 that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. 9 And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10 to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfilment-to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.

11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession-to the praise of his glory.

Service like Jesus

Sermon by Rev Augustin
Luther House Chapel
21 August 2016

This is part of series of Service in the month of Stewardship

Isaiah 58:9b-14

Hebrews 12:18-29
18 You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm; 19 to a trumpet blast or to such a voice speaking words that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them, 20 because they could not bear what was commanded: "If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned." 21 The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, "I am trembling with fear."

22 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23 to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, 24 to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

25 See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, "Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens." 27 The words "once more" indicate the removing of what can be shaken-that is, created things-so that what cannot be shaken may remain.

28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our "God is a consuming fire."

Psalm 103:3-8
1 Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

2 Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits-

3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,

4 who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,

5 who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

6 The LORD works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed.

7 He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel:

8 The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.

John 13:3-17

3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel round his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped round him.

6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"

7 Jesus replied, "You do not realise now what I am doing, but later you will understand."

8 "No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet."
Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."

9 "Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!"

10 Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.

12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. 13 "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord', and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Jesus did before going to the cross to remind us to be special people of His Kingdom

1) He showed what love is, to be a people of love. He showed the extent of His love by washing his disciples' feet. V 3-4 He knew His position and therefore he washed his disciples' feet.
14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.

He expects us to wash one another's feet. To wash, you need to lower yourself to their feet.
Do we still serve when we are not acknowledged or appreciated ? The disciples did not offer to wash even Jesus' feet as there was no maid around that day.
Yet Jesus emptied Himself to wash His disciples' feet.

2) Greeting others - they were told top down to greet customers.
Jesus told us to be changed from the inside and not just ordered us to do services.
Jesus embraced services. It cannot be forced upon us. It has to come freely from inside.

Butter Cake Sweet Memory of mum

My Dearest Mum,

It is 4th August and two days before my 22nd Wedding anniversary, and ten months since you left us for glory. I must say, I still miss you. I think of you lesser and the heart is not so sad or heavy as before but don't get it wrong, mum, that I have forgotten you or missed you less. Missing a person is like keeping the person in a special place in our hearts, it is like never to let go, although physically it is a separation for we cannot see each other as we want it. But keeping in our hearts is a deeper feeling, we still feel connected deep inside.  It is kind of

Little things and incidents in life remind us of you, what would mum do ? As events unfold in our life, we still think of you, what would mum say ? Often, your candid and funny jokes and tales still come up at our dining table. Dad would join in with a bit of cheer. He loves to hear your jokes and tales. To hear us, your children still talking about you and what would you do or say in certain situations is assuring for dad, that we have not forgotten you.

On 1st July, it would have been your 79th birthday on this earth, I was not able to wish you Happy Birthday on facebook or whatsapp. To me, once we miss the opportunity while one is still alive, some opportunities are just gone. I just could not do it, perhaps one day, I will be able to do that.

I thought of you twice this week, last weekend I baked Butter Cake since 1992 ? Just kidding, I mean since a long time ago, I have been baking Rich Cakes, Sponge Cakes, and all sorts of cakes but not Butter Cake. When I smelled the Butter cake, I remember you as you only baked Butter cakes and you used to bake the yummiest Birthday Cake without icing and brought to our Kindergarten classes to celebrate our birthdays ! We were very proud kids to have home-made birthday cakes.

Then Andrew talked about visiting Labuan for a short trip and we were talking about duty-free alcohol and chocolate and I mentioned textiles is cheaper too. Then I told them before I got married in 1994, 22 years ago, you and I went for a trip to Labuan in early 1994 to buy textiles for my wedding needs. I bought the entire household curtains (7 large windows) textiles from there and both you and I managed to buy our evening gowns materials, mine was cream colour, mum was maroon red. To both of us, it was excellent deals.

Mum, you have always been a good sport for us. You were always gamed enough to try something new with short notice and planning, you could just join the band wagan and go along with the no-plan game plans. You enjoyed the delights of little things in life. To me, you were always very resourceful and well connected. In that Labuan trip, we stayed with your long-time friends and saved some money in hotel so that we could shop more.

Both are sweet memories of our precious time together. I love you, mum.

Your daughter,

Tyng-Tyng

Overpowering Your Goliath

Sunday Sermon by Preacher Elder Annie Tsen

1 Samuel 17:1-50

17 Now Jesse said to his son David, "Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp. 18 Take along these ten cheeses to the commander of their unit. See how your brothers are and bring back some assurance from them. 19 They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines."

20 Early in the morning David left the flock with a shepherd, loaded up and set out, as Jesse had directed. He reached the camp as the army was going out to its battle positions, shouting the war cry. 21 Israel and the Philistines were drawing up their lines facing each other. 22 David left his things with the keeper of supplies, ran to the battle lines and greeted his brothers. 23 As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual defiance, and David heard it. 24 When the Israelites saw the man, they all ran from him in great fear.

The threatening Goliath

Do not create Goliath in our own life. When there is Goliath placed in our life, trust God to fight with us.

Facing the Goliath

Romans 8:15
For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, " Abba, Father."

Luke 1:37
37 For nothing is impossible with God."

Stay focus and Act in faith

45 David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

1 John 4:4
4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

Conclusion

God is bigger and stronger.

Psalm  27:1-2
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation- whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life- of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall.

Romans 8:37
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

Courage is not the absence of fear but despite and in spite of fear, we rise up above the fear.
Faith births forth Courage. We grow faith through worship and prayer. Focus on God and not on the Goliath.

Know (Ya-da) God through experiences and not on just head knowledge.

Remembering my father in law, Justin Heng

Mr Justin Eng (Heng) Kok Yoon
12 January 1939 - 10 July 2016
77 years old

In the early morning of 10 July 2016, at 4:30 am, my father-in-law, Justin Heng breathed his last. It was a gradual decline of health since the PSA reading went up in 2014.  In my 22 years of interacting with him as my father in law and how our lives are intertwined as one big family where he is the head of "The Hengs" household, I grew to respect and love him as a father figure. Here are my five fondest memories of him.

1. His problem solving skills
My father in law is famous for his ingenious creativity to make something out of nothing or old parts. He could re-assembled some items into a new household items. He is the problem solvers for many household and work problems. For his children, they just need to describe what problems bother them, he would not say much or promise anything but he would proceed to come up with a solution in due time, always to surprise his loved ones and give them great delights. He is our very own inventor.

One time in the old house at Inanam, he had the balcony fence on first floor saw apart so that a piano could be lifted up from ground to where they stayed, he then joined back the balcony fence. Without this ingenious act, Michael, my husband will not be playing piano. According to Michael, it was his dad who allowed him to learn piano, his relatives were saying that music is meant for girls !

In his own house, there are many household items created by him which would cost a lot if we got contractors to do, he just did it himself. Sure, those items do not look very modern or designer look but they are perfectly functional.

2. His kindness
He is a very kind person and take great care to make you feel comfortable and welcomed. During my confinement for my four kids, he would drop by and said "Hello" but he would not enter the house telling me that he has worked and sweat a lot and he just wanted to know if both me and baby were doing ok. He would clear up the garden so that there be less mosquitoes.

I could remember, right after our wedding, he said this to me, "Now that you are married into our family, how would you like us to call you ? How does your parents call you ?" I did not expect him to ask so I replied they called me "Tyng-Tyng". Next thing I knew, he called me "Tyng-Tyng" and I did not respond, finally I realised that he had been calling me and we had a good laugh. I told him that it probably worked best to just call me as "Doria". The fact that he bothered to ask me about my name showed his kindness in dealing with people.

3. His Services
He has the personality temperaments of a Dove and Owl, he loves to serve others and a great thinker that made him a great problem solver. His services to people around him is a great mark of his personality. During his funeral, many people talked about his kindness and readiness to lead a hand to help others. His neighbour, Aunty Maureen, a widow came to the funeral parlour alone, driving and parking at the lower car park and walking up the long staircase with walking stick. She told me, "Whenever I need a helping hand to fix some items in my house when my son was too busy to help, Ah Heng would come when I called him to help. How could I not pay him my last respects?"

If any of his former colleagues called him for some technical backup or support, he would make himself available and be there in person to help. In return, he had a pool of resources for almost anything under the sun. He had contacts who could build wooden house, repair and rebuild cars and many more. To us, he is like a walking "Yellow Pages" for technical stuff and resources.

4. His Favorite Dishes & health conscious
In every family celebrations, two dishes must be present on the dining table - the Fish (steamed or Sweet and sour) and the Fried Chicken. It is interesting that as a Hainanese, he did not like the boiled Chicken which is so famous as Hainanese Chicken. So, in every family celebration, there would be two types of chicken or three :- Boiled Chicken, Fried Chicken and or Curry Chicken. He loves Fish head and he could handle the fish heads like a pro, gently sucking out the fleshy parts of the fish head. His sister, Mei-Fung Mai and wife would ensure that there be his favorite dishes during family celebrations.

He has simple desire in life, just little things could make him content and happy. He was always reading health articles in newspapers and magazines, making enlargement prints and sticking them to fridge so that all who preparing food could read. Once, he read how to make fishes less fishy using lime or lemon and he meticulously did it for many times to teach his sister and wife how to clean a fish before steam. He was making garlic cloves socked in Gin and Red wine and eating them for health.

I believe part of the reason he could have 10 years of quality life after diagnosed with Prostate cancer Stage 2 / 3 was due to his diligent health routines on daily basis He would get up early in the morning, walked his 10,000 steps to Foh Sang area to get his newspapers, had oatmeal for breakfast and the many home-made health remedies like garlic and supplements,

5. His love for fun
Although a quiet figure and the most senior person in the family, he has his fun side and gamed enough for most things. One year, the children proposed to have a draw before Christmas on name whom we would buy Christmas present. He was the only one who took it up so seriously, he drew his eldest son, John, he observed his needs for new tyres for his car, so he bought him a pair as Christmas present. While the rest of us just bought the normal household items and chocolate for one another.

When our family visited Disney Land Hong Kong, he thoroughly enjoyed the whole day with the grandkids, partaking in some theme parks rides (Its a small small world). During the final six months of his life, his mind sometimes crossed-line and he would relived those holidays moments, asking us "Where is our hotel room?" or "Are we going straight to airport after the Sunday breakfast?" It grieved us that he was slowly losing his mind with some crossed-line conversations from the past but it gave us comfort to know that he talked about those travelling moments and it must have gave him a lot of joy to recall them as pleasant memories.

Rest in peace, dad, you are dearly missed and loved. We will cherish you in our heart. We will carry on your legacy as kind, faithful and resourceful people to help others around us.

Inside Our Dreams

Where do people go to when they die?
Somewhere down below or in the sky?
'I can't be sure,' said Grandad, 'but it seems
They simply set up home inside our dreams.'
~ Jeanne Willis

Where do they go to?

Where do they go to, the people who leave?
Are they around us, in the cool evening breeze?
Do they still hear us, and watch us each day?
I'd like you to think of them with us that way.
Where do they go to, when no longer here?
I think that they stay with us, calming our fear
Loving us always, holding our hands
Walking beside us, on grass or on sand.
Where do they go to, well it's my belief
They watch us and help us to cope with our grief
They comfort and stay with us, through each of our days
Guiding us always through life's mortal maze.

The Parable of the Sower

Mark 4:13-20New International Version - UK (NIVUK)

13 Then Jesus said to them, ‘Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable?
14 The farmer sows the word.
15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them.
16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy.
17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.
18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.
20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop – some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.

Mark 4:13

I have heard The parable of the Sower from Sunday School days and numerous sermons preached on it for evangelism and mission purposes. Jesus said that this parable is the first of all the other parables and in fact Jesus indicated that the disciples must understand this parable in order to under the other eight parables. So, it can be stated that The parable of the Sower is the  mother of all the other parables taught by Jesus. It holds the key to unlock the secrets of the other parables.

As we are know and have been taught :-
Sower : Jesus or anyone who shares good news to others
Seed : The Word of God - clearly stated by Jesus (no need to guess)
Soil : The conditions of the hearers' heart
Environment : The world and its temptations
Fruits : The bearing of fruits from the seed sowed into our lives

Often, we heard that this is the story of four types of people and their heart conditions. But, we could read that these are the four stages that each of one could go through. Ground #1 to Ground # 4.

Ground # 1 Along the Path / Side walks V15
As soon as the Word is sown, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them.
Why did Satan come to take away the Word / Seed ? The Word must be very precious and has great impact. Notice that Satan does not come to take away health and peace, he comes after the Word and steal it. Therefore, we must guard the Word.

Ground # 2 On Rocky Place V16-17
When the seed / Word sown on rocky places, it is like a person hear the Word, receive it with joy. Then trouble and persecution come because of the Word. When the Word comes into effect, that is why trouble trouble and persecution come. If the there is no root for the seed, they will fall away quickly.

Ground # 3 Among Thorns V18-19
The Word falls among thorns, the believers have faith and chew on the Word but the desire and cares of the world comes in. Deceitfulness of wealth, worries and desires of the worldly things, choke the Word. When the Lord gives success, He always gives Good Success, so that we have time for everything we love to do for the Lord, our loved ones and ourselves. However, with Bad Success, a promotion that takes away too much of our time to serve the Lord or be with our loved ones or simply for ourselves, then it will make us unfruitful.

Ground # 4 On Good Soil V 20
When the Word sown on good soil, the believers hear the Word, accept, admit, guard and agree on it. It produces much fruits, thirty folds, sixty folds and even a hundred folds. Sometimes, we want double portion of fruitfulness but it is actually many folds that we can have.

Ultimately, all Christians must be like Ground # 4, the good soil where we hear the word, guard the word, nurture it to growth and be fruitful and where the fruits produce more seeds to bear more fruits. Probably, at different seasons of our lives, we have gone through these four types of grounds. Hopefully, as we grow, we will be ever ready to hear, receive and guard the Word.

Here are some of the commentary I have found in internet which are interesting to know.

In Matthew. a total of eight parables are recorded. These eight parables can be divided into three sections.

1) The first sections is "Satan's Plan to Destroy the Churchconsists of the first four parables:
2) The second section "God's Work on Behalf of the Church" (What God does to make sure that Satan does not destroy the church) consists of the next three parables:
  • the Parable of the Hidden Treasure,
  • the Parable of the Pearl of Great Price, and
  • the Parable of the Dragnet.
3) The third section "The Ministry's Duty to the Church" is the last parable, the Parable of the Householder, who takes out of his treasury both old and new.

Notice the comment Matthew makes following the first section. In Matthew 13:34 is an explanation why the first four parables can be titled "Satan's Plan to Destroy the Church":
All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable He did not speak to them, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: "I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world."
What was kept secret from the foundation of the world? Satan's plan to destroy God's plan ofsalvation, which He is fulfilling through the church.

Matthew 13:34 applies specifically to what Jesus had just said, but it also applies generally to all the parables. Through them, Jesus opens up matters that have been concealed from the foundation of the world. In Psalm 78:2, it does not say, "I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world." Instead, it says: "I will utter dark sayings of old," providing another clue that what Matthew 13:34 refers to in respect to the first four parables is dark. Jesus is speaking of dark mysteries, dark things happening. These can only be Satanic things, bad, negative things inspired by the Devil.

What Jesus spoke before verse 34 is primarily negative, not positive, and these negative things have been hidden from man since the foundation of the world. What happened at the foundation of the world? Adam and Eve sinned. That was the first step in Satan's plan—"Get them while they're young"—and he has been doing the same thing ever since. Jesus touches on this in the first parable.
So, in the first half of this chapter, Jesus is saying, "Look, My disciples, this is the plan that you must fight against. If you understand what is in these parables, you will have a pretty good idea of what is happening spiritually."

Unity (Part 5): Ephesians 4 (B)
Matthew 13:3-9

The seed is the Word of God, and its hitting the ground is not the end of the story. A variety of things can happen that will affect the growth of that seed. Some might fall on stone, others might be buried too deep. Rain may come and wash away some of it. Birds may devour others. But because life is in the seed, something will happen.

In the last century, archeologists found wheat and cotton seeds in some of the burial chambers that they excavated. Those seeds—which were probably anywhere from 2,000-4,000 years old—grew when put into the right soil. The spirit of life was still in them, even though they had lain dormant for thousands of years.

This is dramatic confirmation that, if a seed is sown, it will do something when it lands in the right kind of soil. Jesus shows in this parable that the environment affects the seed's growth. When we make the proper application—people are the ground, and our environment and what we do after receiving the seed—the word of truth, containing the doctrines—is what affects its growth. In this analogy, growth represents sanctification, which is is the formation of God's image in us by living His way of life empowered by His Spirit. What we do with the seed is "work[ing] out [our] salvation with fear and trembling" (Philippians 2:12). It is the equivalent of rain, sunshine, weeding, fertilizing, so that the potential for fruit is the greatest. Sanctification is worked out through application, by living the doctrines and the truths of God.

A Rap on The Parable of Sower by Stephen Amato

One day a farmer went out to sow
Scattering seed to and frow
Some fell along the path
Which could not deliver from God's wrath
For the devil took what they hadn't craved
So they didn't believe and were not saved.
Some fell on rocks but withered and died
For their faith was not deep enough to be qualified
To receive the life God promised to those
Who really believed Jesus died and arose.
Yes at first they were overjoyed
But when trials came their faith was destroyed
For they received it without their faith being rooted
And so fell away after they were persecuted
But then some among thorns fell
But in the end didn't mature too well.
For they were too concerned for their security
To bring any fruit to maturity
But those on good soil retained what they heard
It wasn't taken away by any bird
Nor did they fall away like those on the rock
But continued to believe when others did mock
The problems in life would not make them stop
And by persevering they produced a crop
