Sermon on Good Shepherd and his sheeps

Luther House Service
Rev M Augustin

Exodus 32:7-14

7 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. 8 They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, 'These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.'

9 "I have seen these people," the LORD said to Moses, "and they are a stiff-necked people. 10 Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation."

11 But Moses sought the favour of the LORD his God. "O LORD," he said, "why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians say, 'It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth'? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people. 13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self: 'I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land I promised them, and it will be their inheritance for ever.' " 14 Then the LORD relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

1 Timothy 1:12-17

12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners-of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Early 1800, Fanny Crosby caught influenza at 6 years old, they treated her eyes with mustard and caused her blind. She grew gracefully with forgiveness and wrote 8000 hymns under different names. Blessed Assurance

The black sheep always get lost all the time, always want to see if the grass is greener on the other side.

Exodus 32:1

1 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered round Aaron and said, "Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him."

Israelites were quick to forget after Moses' 40 days conference with God. God called them stiff-necked people who were too arrogant to bow their heads. God was fuming in anger wanting to burn Israelites. But Moses interceded with God for his people. He used logics, psychology to argue with God to show mercy to his people and not to remove them. Moses was a shepherd in the desert for 40 years. So he had a heart of shepherd.

We are the people of God. We are called to be good shepherds in this nation. How to do this role well ?

1) Pray for our land
What and how do we pray ? If we were them, what would we pray for ? Not to ask that they be wiped out. We cannot intercede until we open our eyes to see the sufferings around us and out ourselves in their shoes.

2) To love
There is only one all powerful being and his weapon is love.
We could only intercede with we are filled with love. The only way we can change this world is love.
People are self-centered and we don't care.

3) Our standard as good shepherd is Jesus
What set us apart is the grace of God and our achievements. As we measure up to the great Shepherd then we know we lack and in wanting.

The Longest Day from the Book by Cornelius Ryan

12 On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the LORD in the presence of Israel:"O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon."
13 So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies,
as it is written in the Book of p
PpThe sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a man. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel!
15 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.

The day the sun stood still.

Principles we can employ in winning our daily battles :-.

1) Understand the nature of our battle
Ephesians 6:12
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

2) Use every weapon at our disposal
i) God's promise
ii) God's help
iii) God's power
V14.  the day God listened to man ....
Dare we pray audaciously ?

Matthew 7:11 If you know how to give good gifts to your kids, how much your father in heaven will give you more than what you ask for.

Fruit of the Spirit and Way of Love

Fruit of Spirit is sometimes translated as Harvest of Spirit, it indicates its an end product.

Galatians 5:19-26King James Version (KJV)

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Galatians 5:19-26The Message (MSG)

19-21 It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits; the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on.
This isn’t the first time I have warned you, you know. If you use your freedom this way, you will not inherit God’s kingdom.
22-23 But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.
23-24 Legalism is helpless in bringing this about; it only gets in the way. Among those who belong to Christ, everything connected with getting our own way and mindlessly responding to what everyone else calls necessities is killed off for good—crucified.
25-26 Since this is the kind of life we have chosen, the life of the Spirit, let us make sure that we do not just hold it as an idea in our heads or a sentiment in our hearts, but work out its implications in every detail of our lives. That means we will not compare ourselves with each other as if one of us were better and another worse. We have far more interesting things to do with our lives. Each of us is an original.

But the fruit of the Spirit is
love - affection for others
joy - exuberance about life
peace - serenity
longsuffering - willingness to stick with things
gentleness - a sense of compassion in the heart
goodness - a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people
faith - involved in loyal commitments
Meekness -  not needing to force our way in life
temperance - able to marshal and direct our energies wisely

1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

Love is patient,
Love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,
it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

I have never thought of reading 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 with Galation 5:21-22 as one big picture where love is inter-woven into every part of the overall picture.
